Aquarium Equipment Finder

Six questions — what kind of equipment, how large a unit, what you can spend, whether it has to stay plugged in, how you want to control it, and whether you want a particular brand — across 458 products in eight equipment classes. Every result is placed against the median for its own class and size band.

The finder searches the whole corpus. It ranks nothing, it promotes nothing, and it does not hide a product because its listing is incomplete — one that never stated a figure still appears, marked not stated, because a thin listing is not a worse product.

Your requirements

What are you shopping for?

Every comparison on this site is made inside one equipment class. A heater and a dosing pump share no specification worth putting side by side.

How large a unit are you fitting?

Weight stands in for physical size here, and it is the figure this corpus publishes most consistently — 296 of 458 products state one. The specification that would actually decide the purchase, rated tank volume, is stated by fewer than a quarter, so it is shown on the card rather than asked as a question.

What can you spend?

Does it have to stay plugged in?

This is the one that decides where the unit can go, and what happens when the power drops. A mains device needs an outlet beside the tank and a drip loop on the cord; a battery unit keeps working through an outage, which is the entire argument for a leak detector or a monitor.

How do you want to control it?

Automation is most of what you are buying in a feeder or a doser — the point is that it runs while you are away. Stated on 95 listings overall, but on nearly three quarters of the feeders.

Any brand in particular?

Only brands with at least eight products in this corpus are offered — a filter that returns three products is not a filter. Unlike every other question here, this one excludes products whose listing does not name a brand: a seller who did not say who made it has not made a hygger.

How to read the results

The figure beside each result is its weight, and beneath it, where one exists, the median for its own class and size band. 296 of the 458 products state a weight; the rest appear unbanded rather than being dropped.

Where a class holds fewer than eight products with a stated figure, no median is shown. That is a deliberate floor, not a missing feature: quartiles computed from five products describe those five and not the class. 17 class cells clear it here.

What the finder cannot tell you

It cannot tell you whether a unit will keep anything alive. This site publishes no survival, health or water-parameter outcome, because equipment specifications cannot support that claim and the failure mode is a dead tank. It also cannot rank controllers by switched wattage: that figure spans 3 W to 1,875 W across the corpus because it describes the load a timer can carry rather than any property of the timer, which is why it is shown on a card and never asked as a question.

Why weight is the question and rated tank volume is not

Rated tank volume is the specification that would actually decide the purchase, and fewer than a quarter of listings state one. Weight is stated by 296 of 458. Asking a question almost nothing can answer produces a filter that excludes nothing and narrows nothing, so rated tank appears on the card where a stated figure helps and an absent one is visibly absent.
